Reading a book? Hollywood liest // 27 November 2015 to 31 July 2016

Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, Ronald Reagan, James Stewart, Cary Grant or Clark Gable: many glamourous Hollywood stars often used books to convey a certain image. Books rarely played leading roles in films. But they were among the most frequently shown props. Yet now that books no longer represent learning and social status as exclusively as they once did, they are seen less and less on the big screen. The "film career" of books is reflected in the many stills and promotional photos of stars with a book in their hand - taken on set, at home, by the fireside, at the swimming pool, in libraries or hotel lobbies. The collection of photos compiled by Günter Karl Bose of movie stars from the 1920s to the 1970s in reading poses reveals a special piece of cinema history.
